Diane Frankenstein
To kick off Spring Into Reading month, CISPA's (Canadian International School Parents’ Association) World of Words invites parents and staff to attend a lecture by Diane Frankenstein, a noted children's literature specialist. Her new book, Reading Together: Everything You Need to Know to Raise a Child Who Loves to Read was written for parents and teachers of preschool to Grade 5 children. It won the Gold Mom's Choice Award in the United States and has received positive reviews from many magazines and journals, including The Wall Street Journal. In addition to giving great tips on how to start a meaningful conversation about a book with a child, Diane will call on her 20 years of experience to touch on her 101 book recommendations for young readers, plus much more on the topic of teaching children to love reading. Visit www.dianefrankenstein.com for more information.
Here are a few of Ms. Frankenstein's "Eleven Essential Elements" to raise a child who loves to read:
• Enthusiasm and passion for a story are contagious! Don’t waste precious time trying to convince a child of the importance of reading—just read them good stories.
• Be creative and find other times in a day – not just bedtime – when reading can happen. Try a poem with breakfast, a short story with a snack or one chapter with dessert at dinner.
• Help them find their “home-run” books – books that tap into their curiosity and interests, stories where they care about the characters and what happens to them.
• Slow down. Encourage your child to read fewer books and know them well. Children need comprehension – not speed – to become good readers.
Whether your child is an emerging reader or a fluent reader, don’t miss this great lecture!
